1
ABOUT DMRC
• A Government Company jointly promoted by
Government of India and Government of
Delhi.
• Incorporated in May 1995, under the name
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (DMRC).
• The two Governments have 50% shares
each in this Corporation
• Has the responsibility for construction and
operation of Delhi Metro
w w w. d e l h i m e t r o r a i l . c o m
ADVANTAGES OF METRO SYSTEM
• Has a carrying capacity as high as 60,000 –
80,000 phpdt (peak hour peak direction
traffic).
• Requires 1/5th energy per passenger km.
compared to road – based system.
• Causes no air pollution in the city and
lesser noise levels
• Occupies no road space if underground
and only about 2 metre width of the road,
along central median, if elevated.

2
ADVANTAGES OF METRO SYSTEM
• Carries same amount of traffic as 6 lanes of
bus traffic or 26 lanes of private motor cars
(each way)
• Is more reliable, comfortable and safer than
road based system
• Reduces journey time by anything between
50% and 75% depending on road conditions

ADVANTAGES OF RAIL BASED
MRTS
Global Warming: Rail Transport Contributes very little to
GHG emission

DMRC CDM PROJECT
“INSTALLATION OF LOW GHG
EMITTING ROLLING STOCK IN
METRO SYSTEM”
w w w. d e l h i m e t r o r a i l . c o m
SIGNIFICANCE
Date of Registration 29th December 2007
1st Railway Project
Only the 2nd Transportation Project in the
World
w w w. d e l h i m e t r o r a i l . c o m

METHODOLOGY APPLICABLE
TITLE: “ EMISSION REDUCTION BY LOW
GHG EMITTING VEHICLES”
UNFCCC REFERENCE: AMS IIIC
w w w. d e l h i m e t r o r a i l . c o m
CDM REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFYING CRITERIA
• PROJECT SHOULD LEAD TO GHG
EMISSION REDUCTION
• THE PROJECT SHOULD BE ADDITIONAL
• IT SHOULD LEAD TO SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT

SALIENT FEATURES
• DMRC HAS ELECTRICAL DRIVEN MRTS
WHICH USES STATE OF THE ART ROLLING
STOCK ON ALL LINES
• THREE LINES ARE IN OPERATION (65KM) IN
PHASE-I
• COACHES ARE EQUIPPED WITH 3 PHASE
AC TRACTION MOTORS WITH
REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM
w w w. d e l h i m e t r o r a i l . c o m
SALIENT FEATURES
THE TECHNOLOGY EMPLOYED IN
DMRC IS DIFFERENT FROM THE
PREVALENT SYSTEM ADOPTED BY
THE OTHER METRO SYSTEM IN THE
COUNTRY
OTHERS USE CONVENTIONAL
ELECTRO-DYNAMIC RHEOSTATIC
BRAKING SYSTEM.
w w w. d e l h i m e t r o r a i l . c o m

BASIC PRINCIPLE
1. THE PROJECT ACTIVITY REPLACES
CONVENTIONAL ELECTRO DYNAMIC
RHEOSTATIC BRAKING TECHNOLOGY IN
OTHER METROS WITH REGENERATIVE
BRAKING TECHNOLOGY
w w w. d e l h i m e t r o r a i l . c o m
BASIC PRINCIPLE
2. THIS TECHNOLOGY REGENERATES
ELECTRICAL ENERGY DURING BRAKING
(DECELARATING) OF ROLLING STOCK
3. CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM KE IS
DISSIPATED AS HEAT
4. REG ENERGY USED BY OTHER TRAINS IN
THE LINE
w w w. d e l h i m e t r o r a i l . c o m
9
BASIC PRINCIPLE
5. THIS REDUCES THE ELECTRICAL ENERGY
CONSUMPTION OF EQUIVALENT GRID
ELECTRICAL ENERGY REQUIRED BY THE
POWERING TRAINS THEREBY
CONSERVING ELECTRICAL ENERGY AND
GHG EMISSION REDUCTION
